Dr Sobia’s Winter Skincare Tips

As the leaves change colour and the temperature drops, many people look forward to the arrival of winter. However, with the arrival of this season also comes a change in the weather that can impact the health and appearance of our skin. That’s why it’s essential to have a specialised winter skincare routine in place to keep your skin healthy, moisturised, and protected during this time of year.

Skincare is important all year round, but there are certain things you can do in winter that can help you look and feel refreshed. Read on for our top tips for glowing skin this winter.

Stay Hydrated

While the thermometer drops and the mornings and nights get ever colder, the atmosphere around you also becomes drier. The increase in air dryness can leave your skin feeling and looking parched and dried out.

Plus, as the cooler days roll in, you might be reaching for the heating more often. While you might save your icy toes with the heaters, they can compound the low humidity conditions indoors, drying out your skin further.

But don’t worry; you can combat this with simple winter skincare tips.

Make a conscious effort to drink enough water. The daily intake recommended by doctors is around 1.5 litres of water, but that doesn’t mean you have to drink plain water all day long. It’s totally acceptable to include other sugar-free, non-fizzy drinks in with that. You can also increase the number of hydrating fruits and vegetables you consume, such as plums, oranges, tomatoes and cucumbers.

All of this additional hydration will benefit your skin by nourishing it from the inside out.

It’s important to note that drinks like tea and coffee – even hot cocoa! – can have the opposite effect since they’re diuretics, which can potentially lead to greater fluid loss. So be sure to balance your teas and coffees with extra water intake.

Upgrade Your Moisturiser

Embrace the richness of the season and utilise these simple winter skincare tips by upgrading your moisturiser.

This is the perfect time to change up your skincare routine along with the changing needs of your skin. Consider shelving the water-based, lightweight moisturiser that was ideal during the humid, hot days of summer. It likely isn’t capable of getting your skin the long-lasting hydration it needs in the winter’s dry air.

While a heavier moisturiser might not be suitable for all skin types, it’s essential for most people to use a creamier, richer moisturiser in the colder months. These types of formulations create a more protective barrier over the skin, stopping your skin’s moisture from evaporating in the dry air.

Products like Obagi Hydrate Luxe are effective and well-known for nourishing and hydrating your skin, even in harsher conditions.

Wear Sunscreen

The sun doesn’t take a holiday, even in winter. It’s a common myth that the sun doesn’t shine as brightly or isn’t as damaging outside of the summer period.

Harmful UV rays from the sun can easily make it through cloud cover and cause skin damage, even when it’s cold.

To keep your skin safe and looking younger for longer, it’s important to continue to wear suncream with an SPF rating of at least 30. By keeping up with this skincare habit, you can keep your skin safe from the harmful effects of UV rays.

Get A Peel

Winter provides a window of opportunity to try something you might not in the hotter months. A chemical skin peel is one of our favourite winter skincare tips and tricks because it’s the perfect time for this effective and stimulating skin treatment.

With the sun’s rays less intense (still enough for that SPF, though!) than in the height of summer, especially with many of us spending more time indoors on the chilly or rainy days, winter presents a wonderful chance to get a chemical peel.

A chemical peel works by chemically exfoliating the top layer of skin on your face, removing the damaged or dry cells to be replaced by fresh, new and youthful skin.

Chemical peels have enormous benefits, particularly in improving texture, minimising the appearance of pores, reducing lines and wrinkles and addressing acne concerns. Doing your skin peel during winter lets you take on this healing and rejuvenating journey without the risk of overexposure to direct sunlight.

There are several types of chemical peels available, each one with specific tailoring for your skincare concerns. It’s always best to start by consulting with a skincare professional so you know you’ve chosen the right peel for your goals.
